He was born on 3rd March 1944 in Bhadralayam, Ravipuram, Kochi, Kerala, India, he is 78 years old now. He belongs to Hindu religion. His birth sign is Pisces.
His father is Ravivarma Kochaniyan Thampuran, a member of Cochin Royal Family. He was an eminent musician. His mother is Subhadhra Kunjamma Paliyam Swarupam. His siblings are Krishnakumar and Jayanthi.

He was very interested in singing and playing musical instruments since school days, received prizes for playing Mridangam and he won first prize in State School Youth Festival for light music and achieved the Best Mridamgist Award.
